What if there isn't an eco friendly hotel near to your destination?

Even if green lodging is available, there are some things that you can do while traveling, no matter where you are staying, to be more green all on your own.

1. Stay Close to Attractions & Destinations: Even if you're really set on finding environmentally friendly lodging, there comes a point where you have to consider distance from the other places you'll be going.

For example, it may not make a lot of sense to stay an hour away from where you'll be spending most of your time JUST to be in an eco resort.

2. Conserve While Traveling: No matter where you stay, there are things you can do to help conserve. Turn off lights when you leave your room, even though you aren't the one paying the electric bill.

Similarly, you can adjust the air conditioning and heat just as you would at home. You're helping the hotel save money which may not make a lot of sense, but you're also doing something good for the environment.

If you're on vacation, there's no need to give up long, hot showers, but try reusing your towels, or telling housekeeping to simply make your bed as opposed to changing the sheets every day. Small things like this will make a big difference in the long run.

3. Check-Out Electronically: This is a small one, but instead of going to the front desk and getting a paper bill, check out electronically if possible. A lot of hotels will email final statements. A few pieces of paper hardly seems like a big deal, but imagine if everyone checked out this way. That's a lot of paper!

Hopefully these tips will help you to be a little more green the next time you are on the road. The most important thing to remember is that the small things make the biggest difference over time!
