The LEED for homes program addresses the design and construction of green homes and provides pathways to achieve certain ratings. This provides a great way for homeowners to subscribe the to sustainable theory and get on the green "band wagon".

But with most new homes lasting between 50 and 100 years, the environmental impact they have goes well beyond the initial design and construction phase and extends into the total green living experience. During this period of home occupancy the owners of the home will consume energy, water and other resources and will play a major role in how the home performs in the near and distant future.

Since green home building is known by very few owners, the green experience will be a new avenue with which to explore. These new owners, in possession of their new green "baby" will have to know how to care for it, how to maintain it and how to teach others about their home, its features and what benefits, living sustainability affects our total environment.

Green Living Made Easy promotes the total "Green Living Experience" and you will find a great deal of information and tips about living green, staying healthy, using sustainable resources in lieu of conventional resources, saving energy and a wide variety of products to help you ease into your green lifestyle.

This credit category promotes broad awareness for these new LEED for homes residents and rewards them for the educational aspect of their home and experience.

This category is divided into (2) sections. One for private homeowners and one for building managers of multifamily homes.

Overview:

Since durability and performance are the hallmarks of a LEED for Homes home, it is critical that the homeowners are made aware of all of the features, systems and maintenance of the home. A home is in prime condition on "move-in" day, but to keep it in prime condition to save energy, be durable and healthy requires an educational aspect that the occupants should be made aware exists. This prerequisite requires builders to perform a basic education to the new homeowners, but gives rewards those who go the extra mile down the educational and sustainable roadway.

Approach:
The builder is required to prepare and present the operations and maintenance manual to the homeowners.
This manual should be assembled with ease of use in mind so things are well organized and sectioned in such a way that the homeowner can easily find the material they need.
Where possible include the name of the vendors and subcontractors of all installed materials and systems.
Design the manual for long term use so the next homeowners have a quality instrument of their green home.
The builder shall conduct a minimum one hour walk through to achieve the prerequisite.
For LEED AE 1.2, offer additional training as indicated in the credit language, above.
For AE 1.3, create public awareness of the features and benefits of a specific LEED for Homes project, inviting the public to visit and possibly choose to purchase a LEED Home. Public awareness activities that are not included in the credit may be counted if a Credit Interpretation Request is submitted and approved.
