In a nutshell, organic baby clothing is the best option for your baby. In the big scheme of 'going green,' it's probably not the most important thing that you'll do, but it is definitely worth it to pay attention to the types of clothing that you are purchasing and to take the time to buy natural baby clothing whenever you can.

The good news is that typically organic baby clothing is not that much more expensive than any other kind of clothing. The bad news is that it's not as widely available as regular clothes are. However, that's changing and eco friendly options are growing by the day!

If you're wondering what exactly it is that makes baby clothing organic or natural, you aren't alone. We'll try our best to explain that here, and we'll also give you great information about the different eco friendly clothing material that's available and then we'll show you where you can find some of these great baby clothing options for your child!

What Makes Clothing Eco Friendly?

Simply put, eco friendly clothing consists of clothes that are made from fibers in their most natural state. In many instances, chemicals are added - either during the growing of the material - in the form of fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides - or during the production phase - in the form of dyes, etc.

Any time chemicals are introduced, they have the ability to cause harm to the environment, the people who are forced to work around them, and to the final user of the product - in this case, your baby.

For example, let's look at cotton. It's hand's down the most popular material choice in organic baby clothing. Unfortunately, traditional cotton crops use more pesticides than any other crop in the world. The pesticides used on cotton contain known human carcinogens.

Environmental Problems Associated with "Regular" Cotton Crops
unhealthy for the people who manufacture cotton products
chemical treated cotton crops aren't good for the people who have to apply them,
chemical treated cotton crops aren't good for those who live near the crops,
chemical treated cotton crops aren't good for the environment and the soil
and chemical treated crops aren't good for the person who eventually wears that cotton in the form of clothing, because the pesticides don't magically disappear when the cotton is harvested and turned into clothing.

Basically, choosing to buy organic cotton baby clothing as opposed to clothes that are made from 'regular' cotton means that you are choosing to help a whole host of people become more healthy, not just your own family.

Organic cotton is a biggie, but there are some other eco friendly materials to consider as well. We'll go over those next.

Natural Cotton Clothing Material: Natural Cotton:

We've talked a little bit about why natural cotton isn't the best choice, but what makes organic cotton a better option?

Basically, farmers who grow organic cotton use no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic chemicals during the production of their crops.

They also follow strict rules to minimize things like soil erosion and nutrient depletion. The result is cotton that is much better for the environment and for those who purchase the clothing made from it.

Look for clothing that is labeled 100% Organic Cotton to ensure that you are buying true organic cotton baby clothing.

Organic Hemp Baby Clothes

Hemp Baby Clothes

Organic Baby Clothing - Hemp

This is a popular fabric choice with those interested in being more eco friendly, and for good reason. It's one of the strongest fibers on the planet - which means that organic baby clothing made from hemp is going to be high-quality and long lasting.

Organic Hemp also doesn't require the use of herbicides or pesticides during the growing process, which makes it a great organic baby clothing option. For those of you who are worried, hemp that is used for clothing is NOT the same as marijuana.

Organic Baby Clothing - Bamboo:

When you think of bamboo, you might get a picture in your mind of pandas in China or something. However, bamboo is actually emerging as a wonderful, eco-friendly fabric choice.

First, bamboo grows like crazy, which makes it extremely renewable It also doesn't require the use of herbicides or pesticides. Last, it's got a great soft, almost silky, feel to it, so babies will love the way that it feels on their bodies.

Another great advantage to bamboo baby clothing is that it is naturally UV protective so it blocks harmful UV rays from reaching your babies body.

Organic Baby Bedding - Soy:

Soy Baby Clothing is actually pretty new to the eco friendly clothing market and it's not as easy to find, however, it's still a great choice when it comes to natural baby clothing.

This organic baby clothing is made from a by-product of soy bean oil production and the process that's used to create the fabric is extremely earth friendly. Keep your eyes open for clothing that's made from soy!

How to Purchase Eco Friendly Clothing:

Now that you know what makes baby clothes eco friendly, you need to know where to buy them, right?

The good news is that lots of manufacturers are getting on the eco-friendly clothing bandwagon. That means that it's getting easier to find and more and more styles are becoming available all the time.

The other good thing about multiple manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon is that it drives prices down. If you're out shopping, just look for baby clothes that are labeled as 100% Organic Cotton, or otherwise labeled as being eco friendly.

You'll also want to keep an eye out for bamboo, hemp, and soy clothing. Sometimes specialty shops are a great way to go, but even WalMart is starting to carry organic clothing, so you can find it just about anywhere, as long as you know where to look.

If you can't find what you're looking for, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you prefer shopping online, you can get some great deals on cute organic cotton baby clothing and bamboo clothing at Amazon. They have some of the best prices that I've seen as well, so be sure to check out what they've got!

Don't Forget to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle:

Whether you are buying organic baby clothing, or regular clothes, it's always important to reduce, reuse, and recycle if you want to be green.

As the mom of three girls, I know firsthand that reducing with a baby is almost impossible, there's just way too much cute stuff out there to buy!

Make it a point to try to purchase only what you need. And, if you end up buying more than what you need - make sure that you reuse it by passing it on to other babies who can use it!
