What is Organic Cotton?

It's important to note that cotton is one of the most chemically-treated crops in the world.

Cotton alone uses approximately 10% of all agricultural chemicals and 25% of insecticides.

When you add to that the fact that cotton growing only uses 3% of all agricultural land, you realize that a ton of potentially harmful chemicals are being used on this important resource!

The chemicals that are used on cotton aren't just harmful for the environment. They're harmful for those who work in close contact with them, those who live close to cotton fields, and even to the rest of us who purchase clothing, sheets, and other items made from the treated cotton.

What is an Organic Cotton Crop?

Organic cotton addresses these concerns because it's grown without the use of any pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, or chemical fertilizers.

Growers of organic cotton are also required to meet other standards that ensure they are protecting both the environment and their land.

For example, growers of organic cotton utilize something called crop rotation, which means they don't grow the same crop in the same location for more than one season in a row.

Doing this helps to eliminate pathogens and bugs that make their home in a certain type of crop.

What are the Benefits of Organic Cotton Sheets?

Now that you have an understanding of what organic cotton is, the biggest benefit is pretty simple to figure out:

growing cotton organically is far safer for the environment and everyone involved in the growing process. It's also safer for all of us who buy cotton!

However, there are lots of other benefits to purchasing organic cotton sheets (and lots of other items as well!) - Organic cotton is softer and feels better.

Once you've given the sheets a try, you'll never want to go back to regular cotton again.

The price is similar to regular cotton - you're not going to spend that much more money on organic cotton than you would on the regular stuff.

Growers of organic cotton must also submit to other requirements, so you'll know that child labor wasn't used in the growing of the cotton that made your sheets and that all employees were able to work in safe conditions and paid a decent wage.

It takes less water to grow organic cotton, which means another valuable resource is being saved as well.

How Do I Know If My Sheets Are Grown Organically?

The USDA does regulate the growing of organic cotton, however, they don't certify cotton as organic for use in the textile market. If you're going to buy organic, you want to make sure that what you are getting is really organic, right?

Right! Look for sheets that are marketed as being 100% organic cotton. The Global Organic Textile Standard Control Union is a well-respected third-party that verifies if cotton used in the manufacturing of textiles is really organic - if a company meets the standards of the Global Organic Textile Standard Control Union, you can be sure that what you are buying is really 100% organic.
