In the US 340 billion gallons of fresh water is withdrawn from our rivers, lakes and reservoirs. Almost 65% of this water is returned to the same bodies of water and in some cases it is now treated water.

Aquifer Water

In some parts of the US the aquifers have been recorded to have dropped over 100 feet. The water deficit in the US stands at about 3,700 billion gallons of water on an annual basis with self-supplied domestic withdrawals re estimated at 3,590 million gallons a day!

Water efficiency measures that are implemented in a typical home can account for a savings of approximately 30,000 gallons of water per year, which amounts to a savings of over $100.00 per year. Of that, 28% of the total water used in the home is typically used by toilets that are inefficient in their water usage.

The Energy Policy Act of 1992 mandated the use of water-conserving plumbing fixtures to reduce water use in residential, commercial and institutional buildings, which is a great step forward.

Today, water conservation acts require all new toilets shall be water saving toilet and use 1.6 gallons of water per flush or less. However, there are toilets available that use less then 1.3 gallons of water.

That small difference may not seem like a big deal, but when you consider how many times each year a toilet in your home is flushed - that's a HUGE savings over time.

Hover Mouse HERE to see a chart of potential water savings you can achieve with a High Efficiency Flushing Technology (HET) Toilet.

Saving Water with Older Model Toilets: If you live in an older home or have a toilet that was installed prior to 1994, chances are it is using a lot of water - most likely somewhere between three and five gallons per flush.

Fix a Leaky Toilet Fix Your Leaky Toilet

The best way to conserve water if you are using an older toilet is actually to replace the toilet. Many water saving toilets are very reasonably priced and will provide a return on investment within a few years.

If replacing your toilet isn't an option, there are some additional things you can do to conserve water until you are ready to purchase a new, water saving toilet.

First, check to see if your toilet is leaking.

A leak in any toilet can cause a ton of water to be wasted. Checking for leaks is actually very easy. Just add a bit of food coloring to your toilet's tank and then watch the bowl.
If the water in the toilet bowl starts to turn color without the toilet being flushed, you have a leak that should be taken care of.
Another way to reduce the amount of water used each time you flush your toilet is to simply take a plastic container, add some sand, and then seal it tightly.
Place it in your toilet's tank, making sure that you don't place it in a location that will interfere with your toilet's mechanisms.

Toilet Tummy:

Toilet Tummy: The Toilet Tummy is easy to use. Just fill it with water and hang it on the inside of the toilet tank. You save water because the space occupied by the

Toilet Tummy does not require filling with toilet water. This simple procedure will instantly make your toilet water-efficient.

Toilet Tummy

Toilet Tummy Tank Water Diverter

Note: That there are a lot of posts on this subject and many various opinions about the effectiveness of reducing the amount of water in the toilet tank.

At Green Living Made Easy, we recommend a Fill Cycle Diverter, or a Dual Flush Conversion Kit. Just reducing the volume of water in an old toilet tank can cause problem with improper flushing, clogged drains and multiple flushes.

These products are reviewed in the next tab.

Fill Cycle Diverter:

Fill Cycle Diverter: A patented, fast and easy water saver, this product takes excess water from the bowl and diverts it to the tank to reduce water consumption. (This is NOT a flow-restricting device.)

Niagara Conservation Fill Cycle Diverter Niagara Conservation's Fill Cycle Diverter

Pictured is The Fill Master Fill Cycle Diverter, which saves 0.5 - 1.5 gallons per flush pending the number of diverter nozzles sticking out of the overflow tube.

You save water because the quicker the toilet tank fills, the sooner it will shut off. The problem with most traditional toilets is that the bowl fills faster than the toilet tank, which wastes unnecessary water to fill the bowl that could be better used for filling the tank.

A fill cycle diverter fixes that problem. Inexpensively saves up to 75% of the fill cycle water – up to ½ gallon per flush.

Saves up to 2,700 gallons of water per year, installs in just minutes and there are no tools needed. Pretty slick.

Niagara Conservation makes a vast amount of eco-friendly products. Be sure to check them out.
