The Martin HD-28VS is another great fingerpicking guitar from the folks at C.F. Martin. I don't get nearly the thrill of playing this guitar fingerstyle as I do the 000-28VS.
I believe it is because it does not feel as much like a fingerstyle guitar to me. The neck is a bit narrower, it has a pickguard, where the 000 does not and the body, being a round-shouldered big box doesn't have that same vintage feel to me.
The thing that I really DO like about this guitar is that it is much more of a cross-over guitar that that of the 000. The 000 is quite solidly a fingerstyle guitar, while the HD shows more flexibility in that you can be comfortable playing flatpick or fingerstyle guitar on this jewel.
With the East Indian Rosewood Back and Sides, the volume is very well balanced on the fine guitar. The Sitka Spruce top also helps in the excellent projection that this guitar has
The Martin HD-28VS has the big voice of a big bodied guitar, just like a dreadnought (which is very close in dimensions to this guitar, with the exception of the rounded shoulders at the upper bout..
The Martin HD-28VS has an incredible sound. It doesn't have quite the same quality sound as the 000 for fingerstyle and likewise doesn't possess the same quality sound as the Herringbone 28, which is a very solid flatpicking guitar.
Still, with the scalloped bracing, solid Sitka Spruce top and Solid East Indian Back and Sides, the only thing we are missing is the 14 fret neck and the Brazilian Rosewood.
Good as delivered, I love how the Martin HD-28VS was set up, which was almost identical to the 000-28VS. The guys at Martin work their magic on these Vintage Series Guitars!
Playing was great all the way up and down the neck. You can easily play a passage in the 8th position and drop down to the open first and the intonation is prefect.
I checked the harmonics of all the strings and played natural all the way from the 12th to the almost impossible 3rd fret harmonics. The Martin HD-28VS performs great.
The Martin HD-28VS is very solid and well made. This guitar does not feel frail in the least bit. The top is solid and will withstand the tension from medium gauge strings very well.
Please, do NOT put heavy gauge strings on this guitar.
This guitar was put together in a humidity controlled atmosphere and you should keep it in that same type of atmosphere to minimize cracking or wood movement. A good humidifier for your room or home and guitar case is essential to minimize repair bills.
Be sure to visit our page on Guitar Humidity Control for detail information of keeping your guitar in tip-top shape during the dry winter months.
Be sure to register your Martin HD-28VS. If you treat your guitar right you will be able to keep it in great playing condition for a long time.
The biggest enemy of a hollow body acoustical guitar is the lack or the excess of humidity in the air. If you develop problems, a Martin repair center will take care of you.
The Martin HD-28VS is another Vintage Series Guitar from C.F. Martin that I could easily fall in love with - and be broke. These guitars command a good price, but they will do nothing but appreciate in price.
With the round-shouldered Dreadnought like shape, I feel like I prefer the 000-28VS a bit more. .
Even though I do like the sound and feel of a wide-necked Dreadnought, it is hard to match the overtones and volume that you can get out of the Martin 000-28VS.

I love this guitar so much that I've introduced an Martin-Style HD-28VS Ultimate Guitar Plan based on the Martin HD-28V. It will be the D size body, 12 fret neck, 25.4" scale, slotted peghead, scalloped top bracing and similar brace configuration as the Martin.
The only difference is the neck will be a bit wider to be a bit more fingerstyle friendly. if you prefer the Martin style neck, not a problem.
